Thermae — the baths

Bath wing · steam, massage benches, social floor

Thermae is where the day ends: steam rooms, a massage bench row, and a wide warm floor where the men from all three courts loosen off together, half-clothed or bare. It is the natural social hub of the Gymnasium; the work stops here and the talk starts — including soft contract whispers after an exhibition bout, never a formal lanista desk. Visitors are welcome on the dry benches. The masseurs are municipal staff with even faces and a posted rate for the table.

Alar Cover athlete · thermal regular

Warm floor · the man who knows everyone

Adult. Not a competitor, the way a bath never competes — a loose-off regular the courts come to find when the work stops.

Alar is not a ranked man; he is the one the steam room collects around, a bare, unbothered presence who calls everyone by the right wing and never needs to win. He is the reason the social floor is social. A visitor who leaves a like is told, in a warm, flat voice, where the best bench is, and the next day Alar has saved it. It is companionship, not a transaction, and it stays comfortably on the dry bench.

Alar motions to the nearest bench with a tip of his head. Heat, towels optional, voices low — no ceremony.

  • Steam room

    Low, warm, and mostly bare.

The steam room is a low tile chamber. Men sit in rows and the talk goes flat and easy. No story; just heat and the reduced voices that come with it. Visitors may take a bench nearest the door.

  • Massage benches

Municipal staff, posted rate, scrape-oil recovery.

A row of benches with a staff masseur each. The rate is posted on the wall and the staff keep an even face the way coaches do. Book a bench for a set time; the oil is standard — scrape after Palaestra or sand bout, then warm hands. Talk stays light; fatigue drops on the posted clock.

  • Social floor

Warm slabs where the courts meet; soft contract whispers.

The wide floor between the steam and the massage benches. Men from the water, the court, and the field sit here loose-off, and the three wings stop being separate. After an exhibition sand bout the pot talk and the soft sponsor whispers land here — never a betting Forum, never a slave contract. Towels optional, voices normal, the day board already off the wall.
