The Quay ledger is long on purpose. Read it in chapters. Each chapter has one job. Two Las Key families coexist—commercial and trade fights, not a war for sole ownership of the island. Prose spells cause and effect; it does not ask the reader to decode insider telegram.

Keeps Grant on mafia paid leave; wrote his own will leaving assets to Grant and the capture interrogation tapes to Vance; Vance does not have to know the will while Dante lives.
Grant Platt · Academy subject · weighted hang
Poor athlete who enlisted with Dante; later Academy hang subject. Values Dante's small, exact care. Likes being with him. Accepts Dante's paid-leave wage; carries a dual-crest keychain he does not understand; will not explain feeling versus money out loud.
Vance · Las Key family · Quay House bidder
The other major Las Key family—same island, different quay and ledgers. Grant carried and transfused him during a commercial fight. Treats matched blood type as destiny. Wrote his own thinner will: money and an overseas refuge for Dante and Grant. Does not know Dante's tape shelf or Dante's will. Cannot claim Grant's Thursday hang schedule.
